The Patronenkasten 36 (often abbreviated as Patrhk. 36) was a standard steel ammunition box used by the German Wehrmacht during World War II.
Purpose: Designed primarily to hold a 150-round continuous ammunition belt for the MG 34 and MG 42 machine guns. It was primarily utilized in armored fighting vehicles (like tanks and half-tracks), fortified bunkers, and sometimes on anti-aircraft twin mounts.
Design Features: It was constructed of stamped sheet steel, featured an internal carrying handle, and had a hinged lid with a locking latch.
Manufacturer: WA 41: “WA” (or sometimes “WaA”) stands for Waffenamt, the German Army Weapons Agency that inspected and approved military equipment. The “41” refers to the production year, 1941. Sometimes these cans feature the code along with the year (e.g., “HASAG 41” or a 3-letter ordnance code) instead of the standard “WA 41” stamp. In this case its the opposite and there is no manufactuer code.
Date: 41 indicates the year the ammunition box was produced, making it a mid war production example.
Condition: Retains most of the original paint. Bears a waffen eagle waa stamp. The top of the feed door lid, bottom of the can, some small spots internally, and around the edges have areas the paint is missing showing signs of surface rust or bare metal. Cleaned and oiled for its protection. Small dents or dings as shown in the photos. The feed door lid does not close all the way because the latch is slightly bent inwards, should be an easy fix.
