This is the M39 version which switched over to hook straps designed to be attached to Y-straps, but these were removed and a custom leather strap was put in their place. The M39 also featured additional d-rings for the A-frame assault pack to attach to which this tornister bears. The pony fur is in okay shape with some bald spots. The leather is cracking, curling, and slightly dry. Shoulder straps are modern replacements and hook onto the bottom hooks of the tornister so it can still be worn like a backpack. This could still have life left it and can be used for display or reenactment without worry. I recommend putting some leather conditioner on to make the leather more pliable. Manufacturer marked and dated 1942.
